Chapter Twenty-Six

A loud horn blared a moment after she stepped through the portal, and Alison had to dart aside to avoid being hit by a yellow taxi. The Middle Eastern driver was shaking his fist at her as it passed by, and his mouth moved with muffled curses. The fare in the back seat only stared at her with wide eyes, obviously wondering how a strange woman had appeared in the middle of the street as if from nowhere.

She hurried to the sidewalk, then paused for a moment to let her pounding heart slow into a more normal rhythm. Opening the portal in the middle of the road hadn’t been her intention, but she wasn’t as familiar with this location as she should have been. It was pure luck that her one visit here had been seared into her memory so much that she was able to open a portal at all.

Straightening up, Alison raised her head to stare at the brightly lit letters that proudly proclaimed the name of the hotel and casino. The lights flashed in intriguing patterns, almost hypnotizing casual passersby into changing the direction of their steps and entering through the golden revolving doors.

Babylon.

Alison sniffed a laugh as she read the sign. Unlike other casinos in Las Vegas, this one hadn’t grown much beyond its humble roots. The original parts of the building had been constructed in the 1940’s, when the lure of legalized gambling began drawing big crowds to the middle of the Nevada desert. Those crowds only grew with the years, bringing more and more people.

Every one of those people came to Las Vegas stuffed to the brim with greed, lust, or gluttony. Often all three. Each of those base emotions fed the demon lord who had called this place home for most of a century, as well as the small army of demons who flocked to feed from his scraps. Mammon had grown into one of the most powerful beings in the world during that time.

Alison let her eyes run across the gray stone and narrow windows of the building. Unlike the monstrosities on the nearby Strip, Babylon was a modest hotel with perhaps a couple hundred rooms in two short towers at the back of the property. Mammon didn’t care if people came here to stay overnight, he only wanted them to give in to their greed, lust, and gluttony at the attractions available within his lair. While he was now powerful enough to feed from the emotions of people within the entirety of Las Vegas, the meal was all the more delicious when it was close at hand.

She took a deep breath and moved toward the glittering revolving doors. It was quiet on the street at her back and there were few pedestrians on the sidewalk, but that was normal for this faded part of town. All the glitz and glamour had moved on, to the nearby Fremont Street and the Las Vegas Strip. The Babylon was one of the few holdouts, clinging to the fading edges of the town which saw millions of tourists every month.
